Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie

Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie is a 1997 American action film directed by David Winning and Shuki Levy. It is set in the Power Rangers universe, serving as a bridge between Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo. The film was produced by Saban Entertainment and, like the previous film, distributed by 20th Century Fox.

The film was released on March 28, 1997. In its opening weekend, the film played on 2,113 screens, and pulled in $3,301,135, finishing in seventh place domestically. It ultimately grossed $8,363,899 theatrically in the U.S. and $9,615,840 worldwide.

Unlike Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, this film takes place within the continuity of the television series. The first episode of Power Rangers Turbo takes place after the movie. Additionally, unlike the first movie, the appearance was closer to the television show. The Ranger suits were spandex rather than the armor-like suits of the first movie, and the Zords and Megazord were also costumes rather than computer-generated animation. Certain sets and costumes from the movie, such as the Power Chamber set, the Alpha costume, and the Maligore costume were also used in the television show (with the latter being modified and reused as Dark Specter in Power Rangers in Space).

Plot

An evil alien pirate named Divatox hatches a plan to release her fiance Maligore from the island of Muranthias on Earth. To get to the island, she needs to kidnap a wizard named Lerigot from the planet Liaria, and use his magical key. Luckily for Lerigot, he evades capture and flees to Earth, where he seeks help from his friend, Zordon.

The Rangers are practicing for a martial arts tournament. Rocky makes a wrong move and ends up throwing out his back. While visiting him at the hospital, a young friend of the Rangers named Justin discovers the Rangers' identity.

Zordon summons the Rangers to protect Lerigot. Armed with Power Boxes, Tommy and Kat rescue Lerigot from the African wilderness, but they end up losing him to Divatox later on. Divatox takes the wizard to Muranthias along with other captives - Bulk, Skull, Jason, Kimberly, and Lerigot's wife Yara and child Betel.

Before taking off after Divatox, the Rangers are given new powers by Zordon and Alpha, which makes them Turbo Rangers. They are joined by Justin, who takes Rocky's place as the Blue Turbo Ranger. The Rangers sail on a ship to get to island Muranthias. During the journey, they face the Putra Pods, creatures sent by Divatox to stop the Rangers from reaching the island. When Divatox arrives on the island along with her crew - Elgar, Rygog and an army of Piranhatrons - she sacrifices Jason and Kimberly to Maligore's fire.

The Rangers reach the temple to find their friends turned evil by Maligore's flames. The team battle Jason, Kimberly, and the rest of Divatox's forces as Maligore arises from the fiery pit. Lerigot restores Jason and Kimberly back to good, and the Rangers fight Maligore with their Power Weapons. Maligore proves to be too much for the Rangers to handle. The Rangers flee, and Maligore grows into a giant. The Rangers call on the Turbozords and form the Turbo Megazord, with which they destroy Maligore.

The Rangers save the day just in time to win the martial arts competition, with Jason taking Rocky's place in the competition and Justin replacing Rocky as the Blue Ranger, as an infuriated Divatox swears vengeance on the heroes.

Power Rangers Turbo

Power Rangers Turbo is the third installment in the long-running Power Rangers franchise of television shows. The show was prefaced with the second movie in the franchise, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Like its predecessors, Power Rangers Turbo included footage from the Japanese television show Super Sentai, in Turbo's case from the twentieth series, Gekisou Sentai Carranger. The series introduced a child actor as the new Blue Ranger, and featured the departure of the long running characters Zordon and Alpha 5, as well as the team of Rangers, sans Justin, and introduced four new characters to take the place of the veteran Rangers.

Synopsis

After the defeat of Maligore, the Turbo Rangers graduate from high school and prepare to resume life as normal, but are attacked by a vengeful Divatox. Soon after, the Rangers long time mentors, Zordon and Alpha 5 return to Zordon's home planet of Eltar, making way for the spectral Dimitria of Inquiris and the next in the line of robots, Alpha 6. Other changes are also seen as Ernie leaves the series and Lt. Stone takes over the Juice Bar and Bulk and Skull are turned to monkeys.

Later on in the season, the Rangers must pass on their powers to a new team and choose four new candidates to replace them, with Justin being the only remaining member of the team. This episode sees the return of Zordon and Alpha 5 for the event. The Rangers are also joined by allies such as the Phantom Ranger, a mysterious being from another world, and the Blue Senturion.

The end of the season also sees the team learn of the capture of Zordon by Dark Specter, though Zordon is able to warn the Rangers not to rescue him as it would leave the Earth defenseless. A short while later, the destruction of the Power Chamber begins once Divatox manages to find the location and storm it with her army of grunts and monsters, defeating the team and blowing up the Power Chamber. The powerless Rangers then find a way off of Earth and head for space to save Zordon, with Justin choosing to stay behind with his father.
